European companies fall for Biden’s flirtation Related articles

US President Joe Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) appears to be having the intended effect. Reuters reports that German hydrogen company Thyssenkrupp Nucera is considering ramping up production in the United States, due to growing consumer interest.

The increased interest is due to the IRA, says CEO Werner Ponikwar. ‘We’re getting a new growing market. The interest in our electrolysers (with which hydrogen can be produced, ed) has increased considerably».

Thyssenkrupp Nucera is a company that produces machines capable of producing green hydrogen. The company’s focus is primarily on the so-called alkaline electrolysis machines – an important means of producing hydrogen. According to Credit Suisse, these types of machines will eventually serve 60% of the world’s hydrogen market, as they’re better suited to larger projects.

Other companies also attracted to the IRA

There have long been concerns from Europe about the growing strength of the inflation-cutting law introduced by Biden. EU member states fear that European competitiveness will weaken and companies will leave the EU to explore the US market. Especially green initiatives are subsidized by the IRA. As a result, Audi, Schaeffler and Northvolt are also considering increasing their presence in the United States.

To strengthen the EU’s position, the European Commission has drawn up plans to maintain activity in the EU. For example, European state aid rules will be temporarily relaxed. This should make it easier for Member States to invest in renewable energies. Furthermore, Brussels also wants to set up a fund through which more investments will be made in its industry, such as ‘clean’ technologies.
