2.1 billion trips expected in China at the Spring Festival
According to China’s Lunar Calendar, 2.1 billion trips are expected within the country this year during the Spring Festival holidays, when the new year begins.
According to the statement from the Ministry of Transport, after the easing of the measures due to covid-19, it is expected that trips during the 40-day holiday period from January 7 to February 15 of this year will increase by 99%. 5 percent compared to last year.
While road, air and rail passenger numbers are expected to reach 70 percent of the pre-COVID-19 epidemic level, an estimated 2.1 billion individual trips will be made.
Last year, 1.06 billion trips were made during the 40-day holiday period from January 17 to February 25.
THE LARGEST MASS MIGRATION IN THE WORLD
In Chinese traditions, it is important for people to return to their hometowns before the New Year and spend the New Year with their families.
Known as the “world’s largest mass migration,” hundreds of millions of Chinese visit their hometowns and the trips take place during the “Cuncie” Spring Festival, which includes the new year.
Spring Festival travel, called “Chunyün”, dropped significantly during the epidemic period, when no-travel warnings were issued due to the Covid-19 outbreak.
According to the traditional 12-animal lunar calendar, China will enter the “Year of the Rabbit” on January 22 this year, leaving the “Year of the Tiger” behind. (AA)
