TurkStat announced the population of Turkey
Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK) Population and Housing Census, 2021 data announced.
Consequently, according to the results of the 1927 census carried out in the early years of the Republic, the population of Turkey, which was 13 million 648 thousand 270 people, showed a constant increasing trend over the years and reached 84 million 680 thousand 273 people. in 2021.
While the male population was 6,563,879 in 1927, it rose to 42,428,101 in 2021.
While the female population was 7 million 84 thousand 391 people in 1927, it increased to 42 million 252 thousand 172 people in 2021.
When the population growth rate of Turkey is analyzed by years, it is observed that the annual population growth rate, which was 21.1 per thousand in 1935, was 12.7 per thousand in 2021.
THE ELDERLY POPULATION INCREASED, THE PROPORTION OF YOUNG PEOPLE DECREASED
According to TUIK, the age structure of Turkey’s population has changed.
Noting that the elderly population is increasing and the median age is increasing, TURKSTAT announced that the proportion of children and youth in the total population has decreased.
Consequently, although Turkey still has a relatively young population structure compared to countries with an elderly population structure, the elderly population is numerically quite high.
AVERAGE INCREASE IN POPULATION
The median age, which is one of the important indicators used in the assessment of the age structure of the population, was 21.2 years in Turkey in 1935 and became 33.1 in 2021.
When analyzing by gender, it was observed that the median age, which was 19.1 for men in 1935, increased to 32.4 in 2021, and from 23.4 in 1935 for women, to 33.8 in 2021.
THE RATIO OF THE WORKING-AGE POPULATION INCREASES TO 68 PERCENT
The proportion of the population in the age group 15-64, defined as the working age, which was 54.7% in 1935 in Turkey, increased over the years and reached 67.9% in 2021.
On the other hand, while the proportion of the population in the 0-14 age group, defined as the infant age group, was 41.4 percent in 1935, it declined over the years to 22.4 percent. in 2021.
The proportion of the population aged 65 and over, defined as the elderly population, increased from 3.9 percent in 1935 to 9.7 percent in 2021.

4.2 PERCENTAGE OF WOMEN WHO CANNOT READ OR WRITE
While the illiteracy rate in Turkey was 80.8 percent in 1935, this rate has shown a continuous downward trend over the years, falling to 2.5 percent in 2021.
When analyzed by gender, the illiteracy rate among men decreased from 70.7% in 1935 to 0.8% in 2021, and from 90.2% in 1935 to 4.2% in 2021 for women.
UNIVERSITY GRADUATE RATE 17.6 PERCENT
While the primary school graduation rate in Turkey was 28.8% in 1970, it was 22.5% in 2021.
The rate of graduating from primary, secondary or equivalent schools increased from 3.6 percent in 1970 to 25 percent in 2021.
The high school or equivalent graduation rate was 2.6 percent in 1970, while it was 22.4 percent in 2021.
On the other hand, while the rate of higher education graduates was 1 percent in 1970, this rate reached 17.6 percent in 2021.
2.7 MILLION PEOPLE MIGRATE BETWEEN PROVINCES
The population migration rate between provinces, which was 3.18 percent in the 2007-2008 period, became 3.28 percent in 2021, following a fluctuating course over the years.
That is, 2 million 777 thousand 797 people migrated between provinces in 2021 in Turkey. Men made up 47.5% of this population and women 52.5%.
8.8 PERCENT OF THE POPULATION IS SYRIAN, 5.7 PERCENT WERE BORN IN AFGHAN
Among the 3,141,351 people residing in Turkey but born abroad, the Bulgarian-born ranked first with 11.4 percent.
Bulgaria was followed by the German-born with 10.5 percent, Iraq with 10.4 percent, Syria with 8.8 percent and Afghanistan with 5.7 percent, respectively.
1.7 MILLION OF THE POPULATION ARE FOREIGNERS
While the foreign resident population in Turkey was 1,792,036 people in 2021, 49.7 percent of this population were men and 50.3 percent were women.
When the distribution of the foreign population residing in Turkey is analyzed by country of citizenship, it is observed that Iraqi citizens occupy the first place with 18 percent.
Iraqi citizens were followed by Afghanistan with 10.2 percent, Iran with 7.2 percent and Turkmenistan with 6.9 percent, respectively.
DECREASED FAMILY NUMBER
When looking at household types in Turkey, over the years, single-person households and people who do not have a spouse, mother-child or father-child relationship; In other words, an increase was observed in the proportion of households made up of more than one person without a family nucleus.
It has been observed that the proportion of households that are defined as a single-nuclear family, made up solely of a spouse or spouse and children, or single-parent and at least one child, and households defined as an extended family made up of at least one family nucleus and other people, has decreased over the years.
HOUSEHOLD SIZE REDUCED TO 3 PEOPLE
It was observed that the median household size in Turkey, which was 4 people in 2008, showed a decreasing trend over the years and decreased to 3.23 people in 2021.
The number of households, defined as a community consisting of one or more people living at the same address, whether related or not, increased from 21,91,75 in 2014 to 25,329,833 in 2021 in Turkey.
THE MOST POPULAR NAMES WERE YUSUF AND ZEYNEP
When the names given to babies born in 2021 were examined, it was seen that the name Yusuf in boys and Zeynep in girls ranked first.
When the most used names by gender among the population of Turkey were examined, it was observed that the name Mehmet in men and Fatma in women ranked first.
