‘We don’t want a marble quarry’ protest by villagers in Mersin
The marble quarry that was intended to be built in the village of Korucuk in the Anamur district of Mersin provoked a reaction from the local population.
The villagers, who had acted before, prevented the EIA meeting that was intended to take place this time, blowing their whistles and making noise.
The residents, who participated in the action and displayed banners against the construction of a marble quarry, stated that the investment in the marble quarry would generate significant environmental and noise pollution in the region and expressed their opposition to the end.
DECIDED ‘NO EIA REQUIRED’
Lion Mining Company, which wants to open a marble quarry, decided from the Mersin Governorate that EIA is not required. The local population and the Mersin Environment and Nature Association (MERÇED) filed a lawsuit against the decision.
When the administrative court ruled in favor of the local population, the company took initiatives to obtain a positive EIA report this time. The EIA public information meeting held for the marble quarry saw protests from local residents.

Members of the Mersin Nature and Environment Association (MERÇED) and 4 village heads also supported the action of local residents.
