In European Union (EU) countries, the share of electric cars in total sales exceeded 20 percent for the first time in August.

The European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) announced new car registration data for EU countries for August.

According to the data, new car sales in EU countries increased by 21 percent last month compared to the same period in 2022, reaching 787,626.

Registrations of new vehicles in the member countries of the Union increased by 17.9 percent in January-August 2023 compared to the same period last year, reaching 7 million 78 thousand 464.

In August, 32.7 percent of new cars sold in EU countries were gasoline, 23.9 percent were hybrid, 21 percent were fully electric, 12.5 percent were diesel, 7.4 percent were plug-in hybrids and 2 percent were plug-in hybrids. of other fuels.

INCREASED BY 118 PERCENT

Thus, the share of electric cars in total sales in EU countries exceeded 20 percent for the first time and surpassed diesel cars.

Sales of electric cars increased by 118.1 percent in August compared to the same period last year, reaching 165,165. The number of electric cars sold since the beginning of this year amounted to 984,864.

Car sales increased in August by 37.3 percent in Germany, 24.3 percent in France and 11.9 percent in Italy compared to the same period last year.

THE NEWEST CARS ARE IN GERMANY

Among the 27 member countries of the Union, the largest number of new cars entered circulation in Germany in August. During this period, 273,417 new cars were registered in Germany, 113,599 in France and 79,727 in Italy.

In this way, the supply chain problems experienced in the European automotive market last year were overcome.

According to manufacturers, the VW Group sold the most new cars in the EU in August with 209,548.

The VW Group was followed by the Stellantis Group in sales of new vehicles in the EU. The Stellantis Group, which includes brands such as Peugeot, Fiat, Citroen and Opel, sold 131,532 cars.

The Renault Group ranked third with 74,879 new cars, and the Hyundai Group ranked fourth with 66,033 units. (AA)
